Administrative HistoryOrpington Chamber of Commerce was part of a business network whose aim was to provide practical advice and support to local companies. The commercial development of Orpington town centre took off in the late 1920's and the end of the role of Parish Overseer on 1 April 1927 led to the rural district council becoming the rating authority for the town. On Tuesday 26th April 1927 a general meeting was held in order to form the Orpington Chamber of Commerce with an objective to: "promote, advance and protect the commercial and general interests of Orpington and to assist in the development and improvement of the town and neighbourhood". The first meeting was held on 2nd May 1927 with Mr. A. F. Mullock having been elected as Chairman. The administrative structure comprised of a Chairman, Vice Chairman, Hon. Secretary and Treasurer with meetings to be held monthly. Council minutes and Chamber minutes are held in the collection whilst references are made to sub-committees such as the shopping week committee.

For the next 60 years, the organisation met with the aim of promoting local business interests instigating initiatives such as 'Shopping Week' and decorations and lights for the high street at Christmas. Special competitions are recorded during shopping week whereby local residents could win money when they spotted a 'secret' shopper (clues were given to his identity). At times the minutes report apathy amongst members leading to an emergency debate in 1947 proposing that the chamber should be disbanded.

The minutes of the Orpington Chamber of Commerce held within this collection finish in 1987 when low membership was reported. The Acting Chairman in 1987 was Norman Farrow. The organisation seems to have ceased to function c.1991 when the 'Orpington Promotions Group' was created with in the Bromley Chamber of Commerce. It appears that the Orpington Chamber may have been subsumed into the Bromley Chamber of Commerce.
