TitleBromley Philanthropic Society
Date1851- 1977
Administrative HistoryThe Bromley Philanthropic Society founded in 1841 registered as a Friendly Society in 1851, submitting annual returns to the Registry. The Society devoted itself to assisting the elderly, sick, and needy of an area it termed `Little Bromley' i.e. the town and its immediate vicinity, not the area covered by the modern borough. A purely voluntary organisation it relied on members' subscriptions and financial donations by local commerce for funds. Initially it never gave cash directly but instead provided the necessities, groceries, fuel etc, required by the needy. However in recent years the society began to assist with rent arrears and household bills and families or individuals were frequently recommended for assistance by the Social Services. In the 1970's B.P.S. declined for lack of financial support and closed in 1977.
