TitleElectoral registers, London Borough of Bromley
DescriptionElectoral registers were first compiled under the Representation of the People Act 1832. Further improvements were made by the Parliamentary Voters Registration Act 1843. Published registers of electors lists for the London Borough of Bromley area, including the pre-1965 authorities for Bromley, Beckenham, Orpington, Penge and Chislehurst. This collection is held by both the Local Studies Library and Archives. Where items are available on the open shelf in the Local Studies Department the item is marked as being held by the repository of `Local Studies'. The Archives copy is held by the `London Borough of Bromley Archives', these items will need collecting from the store, so pre-ordering is recommended. Where there is a Local Studies and and archival copy the Local Studies copy will be produced. Some earlier poll books can be found on the Library catalogue and include Kent for 1734, 1790, 1802, West Kent 1835, 1837, 1847, 1852, 1857, 1865, 1868 and Occupiers list for Penge 1899. Streets and wards and constituencies have changed over the years and many of the volumes have street indexes to enable access. The age to qualify to vote changed from 21 to 18 in 1969. Prior to 2002, the register existed in a single form and was freely available for use. Any company, organisation or person could buy a copy. The Representation of the People 2002 (Amendment) Regulations were introduced to revise the rules allowing access to the register by establishing a new framework governing access to and the supply and sale of electoral registers. As a result, since 2003 there has been two versions of the electoral register: a full version and an edited version of the full register. The full electoral registers are available for the current year from the archives, it is best to pre-book this before visiting. The full registers are catalogued with other London Borough of Bromley records under the reference number C/LBB/E/FR. Only the full electoral register for the current year can be produced; all previous full electoral registers are closed to public inspection.
